FUMIGATION SERVICES GAUTENG

In terms of the IPPC (International Plant Protection Convention) Regulations, all wooden and untreated commodities need to be fumigated before they are exported to other countries. This is to prevent “Stored Product Pests” from one country being “exported” to another country, where they might cause infestations that cannot be controlled by the receiving county’s natural fauna and flora. One can think of Fire Ants that have crossed borders from South American Countries to North American Countries, where they cannot be controlled. Locally, one thinks of woodborer that infects wooden furniture, leaving holes in the furniture, characterised by fine dust around the furniture. 

All International countries have different fumigation requirements, with the strictest countries being Australia and New Zealand, due to their unique fauna and flora. 

Plants, seeds, bacteria and other pathogens, can “hitch” rides in containers and other packaging to countries where they are not endemic and it is therefore important that the “export” of these be limited in other countries. Raw commodities cannot be exported without a valid Fumigation Certificate of treatment. 

In addition to plants and pathogens, Stored Product Pests (SPP’s). also need to be controlled locally. These pests usually infest grain silos and other mass raw food products. These products also need to be treated be it enters the production line. Treatment is usually performed with phosphine gas to rid the product of any infestation.
